Kindergarten - Ms. Rachel Ward
In religion class, the kindergartners of Holy Cross are learning, among many other things, the giving to us of God’s word, the fact that God loves us, and the fact that Jesus is our friend. Under each main subject are three minor subjects, such as the Story of Creation, seeing God as a loving and forgiving parent, Jesus’ love of children, and recognizing God as their creator. In each subject, the kindergartners learn about God, Jesus, the Kingdom, and basic yet important things that every Christian should know.
Language arts is an important subject in any curriculum. In this class, the kindergartners learn how to read, write, listen, speak, and use different study skills. Each of these subjects includes some important skills-being able to, and enjoying, reading books; journal writing; following oral directions; stating basic self information; and categorizing things. All of these things are important in grade and middle school. Mathematics is one of the few things that people use daily in later life, and is therefore a very significant subject. Holy Cross’ kindergartners are learning many things in math class, among which are counting and writing numbers one through thirty-one, basic geometry (drawing, tracing shapes), patterns, more than; less than, and so on. All of these skills are used later at school, and most are used in adulthood on an almost daily basis. In social studies, the kindergartners are learning some important stuff! The kindergartners’ social studies class teaches many basic skills, as well as some interesting things. Some examples are: using maps and globes; being able to differentiate natural and man-made objects; and recognizing the flag and what it stands for. Science is always a cool subject. Life science, earth science, it doesn’t matter what type, science captures children’s interest! In the kindergartners’ science class, the kids learn about animals and plants, weather, various states of matter, shadow and light, electricity safety, and many other important or just plain cool things. Health class isn’t included in every kindergarten class, but it’s in Holy Cross’! In health class, the kindergartners learn about the importance of such things as nutrition, senses, drugs, exercise, safety, and first aid, along with a lot of other subjects. One day, in fact, they discussed the importance of hand-washing, and some of the other grades joined in the fun!
In phys. ed., the primary emphasis is on the motor skill development of each student. Locomotor activities include movement, rhythmic activities, simple games, relays, singing games, tumbling, apparatus work, and conditioning exercises.
Boy is Mrs. Sweet busy with this class! In art, the kindergartners are learning a multitude of things. Some of the things aren’t exactly artistic things, but how one should feel upon viewing or finishing a work. A couple examples are “establish a sense of pride in their accomplishment” and “appreciation of art in society.” Some of the artistic things that they are learning are: personal expression, perception of likenesses and differences; amounts; and repetitions, and visual awareness of line, shape, light and dark, color, and texture. Another subject in which the kindergartners are learning a lot is music. In music, they have been singing a lot. They have also been learning about things like pre-reading, movement, rhythm, appreciation of music styles, instruments, listening, and liturgical music for the various seasons of the church year. These subjects are basic, yet interesting things to know about music. |
