Grade 3 - Mrs. Julia Rock
Our study of Religion starts with the Church, its early beginning and its structure. We teach about the Trinity, Jesus as the Son of God, the Holy Spirit and Heaven. We study in more detail the Sacraments of Eucharist and Reconciliation and the Commandments. The student learns about the liturgical year, the Bible and the parables and miracles.
In language arts the major fields of study are reading, writing, listening, speaking and study skills. In reading one specific topic is to apply what has been learned from a story to other situations. We examine in writing the use of precise, descriptive words and to reconstruct sentences for variety. The student also learns to prepare and deliver oral presentations.
The study of mathematics at the third grade level focuses on multiplication, division and fractions but also includes problem solving strategies, graphs and money problems. Our health curriculum includes social health with an emphasis on feelings, loneliness and being a friend. We also teach about health and nutrition and drugs, emphasizing at this level the difference between helpful and harmful drugs. Our safety and first aid topic puts a special emphasis on bicycle safety.
In social studies the student learns about the poles, equator and circles plus the relative locations of states, countries and continents. We also locate places on a map with a grid reference system and discuss differences between a globe and a map.
The science student learns about energy including heat and electricity and also begins the study of geology topics such as rocks, fossils, layers of earth and events such as volcanoes, earthquakes and geysers. We also discuss the student’s responsibility as a good steward of the earth.
