Classrooms
Grade 2 - TBA
The second grade Religion class begins to build a foundation for moral development. The Commandments are introduced and they identify their church as Catholic and identify their Pastor and other ministers in the parish. They develop a deeper understanding of the Mass and actively participate. This culminates in the Sacrament of Reconciliation and the First Communion.
In language arts students learn topics in reading, English, writing, phonics, listening, speaking and study skills. Reading focuses on enjoyment of books, word identification in meaningful concepts and cause-effect in stories. In English the student identifies types of sentences and learns about punctuation and basic parts of speech. The writing curriculum introduces cursive and emphasizes writing with fluency and confidence. Students learn, in phonics, about blends, digraphs, diphthongs and other topics.
The mathematics curriculum in second grade includes place value to hundreds and standard numerals to 999. We refresh the student on addition and subtraction facts to 18 and add and subtract three digit numbers. We also apply problem solving strategies, use a hand calculator to solve problems and introduce English and metric units of measurement. The student also begins to learn to read and interpret graphs.
In history and social studies the student discovers topics from our past and present, uses maps and globes and develops an understanding of land forms. The student will describe the location of Michigan’s neighbor states relative to Michigan and identify the seven continents and four major oceans. We also study capital cities on maps of the United States and the world.
Our young scientists study plant growth, animal groups and environmental changes. They also explore magnetism, the relationship of the sun to the Earth and other planets, land forms and extinction. In health we teach mental and social health, growth and development with an emphasis on nutrition, exercise and fitness, and drugs emphasizing the safe use of medicine.
